(1831-1888) Шеридан, Филип ГенриВоенный. В 1853 окончил Высшее военное училище в Уэст-Пойнте [ West Point]; участвовал в нескольких походах против индейцев. В Гражданской войне [ Civil War] принимал активное участие на стороне северян. В 1865, командуя кавалерией на юге, перерезал пути отхода армии генерала Р. Ли [ Lee, Robert Edward] от Аппоматокса [ Appomattox]. После войны (1867) был назначен военным губернатором Луизианы и Техаса, но после ряда конфликтов с президентом Э. Джонсоном [ Johnson, Andrew] был снят с этого поста и отправлен на войну с индейцами (1868-69). Его выражение "Хороший индеец - только мертвый индеец" ["The only good Indian is a dead Indian" (only good Indian is a dead Indian, The)] относится именно к этому периоду.
